A tree can have a green canopy and still have a weak limb or trunk. Likewise, a stressed tree may recover with appropriate care. Location, the extent of damage, and the likelihood of a branch or tree falling all matter when choosing a response.
Choose the right next step
For a tree with minor leaf symptoms and no obvious structural defect, document the changes and seek advice on its health. For deadwood or branches crowding a building, professional trimming may be appropriate. For severe structural damage or a tree that cannot be made reasonably safe, removal may be the better option.
Do not climb or cut a suspect tree yourself. Stay clear of any tree or branch near an electrical line and contact the utility company. Following a storm, treat newly exposed roots, hanging limbs, and sudden leaning as reasons to keep your distance.
